Golden Duck
A daily cricket puzzle: guess the mystery cricketer in eight tries from clues about nation, role, batting, bowling, debut and more — the same player for everyone, every day.
Golden Duck is HEXAVO's own daily puzzle game for cricket fans, in the spirit of the word games people play every morning.
The challenge
A daily puzzle only works if everyone gets the same answer on the same day, the clues feel fair, and nothing gets in the way of a quick game — no sign-up, no ads and no paywall. It also needed to work without a server or a signal.
Our approach
- 1
Built a pool of 375 cricketers from 15 nations, each described by facts rather than photos: nation, role, batting hand, bowling style, debut decade, formats, caps and status.
- 2
Gave every guess eight clue tiles marked exact, close or miss — each paired with a symbol so colour-blind players can play too — with arrows for caps and debut.

Picked the day's cricketer from the date itself, so every phone gets the same puzzle with no server involved.
- 4
Added streaks, a guess-distribution chart, a hard mode, optional daily reminders and a spoiler-free share of your result.
